Changing careers takes dedication,
but with a little perseverance,
you will find success.
Changing careers can be a challenging but rewarding process. We suggest taking it step by step and making a plan. Looking at the big picture can be overwhelming and get in the way of making real changes.
Have fun with it.
Start by trying a few exercises to identify your skills and interests. Focus on your strengths and passions, and think about your weaknesses – where you may need to improve. Sometimes addressing where you need work can be the most fun about the whole process.
Once you have identified your strengths, weaknesses and passions, it’s time to do a little research on potential careers that align with your skills and interests. LinkedIn can be a great resource to look at job descriptions, the skills required, and the typical career path for people in those fields.
Then, assess yourself and see where you have holes or need to improve as compared to people already in those positions. Consider taking courses, volunteering, or doing internships to gain experience. This can also help you determine if a particular career is the right fit for you.
A simple connection can sometimes be all it takes to make that next step.
Networking – although not the most fun for some – can be a good way to learn about different careers and make connections. Sign up for events and webinars, join professional organizations, and reach out to people in the careers you’re interested in. You’ll find most people enjoy talking about their experiences and sharing their wisdom, especially with people genuinely interested in what they do.
Once you are ready to start engaging with HR or Hiring Managers, you’ll want to have a strong resume and LinkedIn profile highlighting your transferable skills and how they relate to the position. Tailor your resume and cover letter for each opportunity. Practice interviewing and be ready to speak to how you will perform in the new role.
Be persistent in your search and open to new opportunities. You may have to start in an entry-level position. That’s ok. Many people who have switched careers and became successful started near the bottom and quickly worked their way up.
It’s important to know, changing careers can take time and effort, but with dedication and perseverance, you can find a rewarding career that aligns with your skills, interests, and passions.
